Welcome to Demographic Insight
Hi! I’m Andrew Hind. I’m a demographer and educationalist. I work for local authorities as an interim education manager and consultant demographer specialising in school place planning. My first degree in English was from Cambridge University. I qualified as a teacher at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. I had a career of fourteen years as a classroom teacher in inner city secondary schools teaching English, drama and music. I then worked as a senior local authority manager for two councils in the south east before taking up consultancy.
I have an MBA and an MSc (Demography) from the University of Southampton, where I am now a PhD candidate, researching internal migration and local area population forecasting in the UK. I am a member of the Centre for Population Change – a research group including six British universities. I have attended three courses at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research at Rostock in Germany. I am a member of the British Society for Population Studies.
I have had permanent roles with Reading Borough Council and Southampton City Council, before “retiring” and undertaking interim assignments with Wokingham Borough Council, Brighton and Hove City Council, Essex County Council, Kent County Council, and Herefordshire Council.
When I am not working or studying I enjoy walking in the city and the country, and sailing my traditional gaff-rigged cutter, now based on the east coast.
I expect to be available for interim assignments or consultancy assignments from the beginning of next year (January 2020), including making and auditing pupil number projections and forecasts, assessing the impact of new housing developments, supporting local councils secure Section 106 developers’ contributions, strategic planning of school places, supporting public consultations and statutory processes, and leading school building projects for local authority clients. I am always interested in corresponding with academics or local authority professionals on my subjects of expertise: population forecasting and school place planning. See the contact page if you’d like to get in touch.
